Show Garden
of Real Life

in collaboration with Jeanne van Heeswijk and Britt Jurgensen.

Commissioned as part of the Clay Farm Public Art Strategy by Futurecity and supported by Countryside Properties.

Inspired by the Royal Show – the UK’s premier agricultural event, which was hosted on the very land that is now home to many new residents in Trumpington – over the past year we’ve been hosting events focused on what community means to residents, old and new.

Many people have grown fond of the little Show Home which has become our home: a space for situations, encounters, events and possibilities that rise to the surface in this process of change. From pub nights to garden events, from film screenings to public discussions, we’ve provided a space where people can meet, discuss, celebrate & develop ideas for growing community.

The ShowGarden of Real Living was developed throughout one growing season, almost entirely from plants gifted by local gardeners or grown by our Gardener-in-Residence Lorelei Lodestar. It hosted a nursery for hundreds of seedlings grown by Lorelei and gifted to the community to populate the empty gardens. The ShowGarden Garden Show marked the end of summer with a feast for 70 people, seated at a table made entirely of waste materials from the surrounding building site. Have a look…

Now the Show Home has become The Public Home – with regular events run by neighbours for neighbours and a place where we can hatch ideas for new community adventures and common spaces. The Public Home is a place to perform our ideas, to negotiate hopes and to collectively imagine our future.
